These education resources link teaching and learning activities to a selection of Meet the Locals videos. This is a partnership between DOC and TVNZ.

Meet the Locals videos highlight the inspiring work of local communities, individuals and DOC staff as they strive to protect and enhance New Zealand's natural heritage.

The units were written for years 7-9 but teachers of younger or older students can easily adapt them. They can stand alone or be incorporated into wider teaching units.

A bird in the hand

This teaching resource explores the features of some of our most endangered birds and the recovery programmes, techniques and technology that is helping them survive.

Our own gold coast

Explore the importance of sand dunes and the impact of losing them in this teaching resource. Find out about the largest coastal plant protection programme in the southern hemisphere.

Shake, rattle and roll

This teaching resource focuses on a slice of New Zealand's volcanic activity, exploring specific volcanoes, the consequences from their eruptions and the effect on local biodiversity.
